Mission Trip Journal: Explore Church goes to Alaska-Day 1

This past summer, Explore Church, a new church plant in Missoula, took a serving mission trip to Alaska. During the next nine days, we will be posting daily updates of the trip written by Sacha Hasenyager.

Explore Church is a new church plant that started in January of 2020, under the leadership of Mark Hasenyager. Planting a church during a pandemic has had interesting challenges, but we have seen God pave the way in beautiful ways for our church family as he has carried us through this season.

We believe that the first two years of a church are foundational in setting the DNA and future of the church. Our leadership is passionate about missions and all our leadership staff have served at least six months overseas. We met Josh & Katherine Seeley who are planting a new church called Set Free in downtown Anchorage, Alaska.

Day 1

Our mission trip is for nine days, we scheduled it from Friday to Sunday, so that we could accommodate our team member’s schedules as much as possible. The main church we are serving with is Set Free which is a new church plant led by Josh Sealy in downtown Anchorage, we will also be serving at Rabbit Creek Hoffman campus which is hosting our team.

Our leaders spent the day meeting with the pastors, picking up people from the airport, and buying food. Food is more expensive, but thankfully Costco’s prices were comparable. Our first impression is that Alaskans are very direct, so much more than Montanans. Conversationally it can take you by surprise at first!
